Butterswick Crematorium
A new style of memorial gardens.
I worked alongside the company director to produce the masterplan for a new crematorium garden outside of Sheffield, UK. The project involved a close working relationship with the architect, engineers and planners to produce a masterplan for planning approval, taking into account the constraints of a sloped site along a major road.
The design utilises the sloping landscape to its advantage to create a series of 4 distinct terraced memorial spaces, with a gradient of form and function. The high terrace consists of a woodland walk for informal memorialisation. As the terraces descend they become more formalised with paths, seating and memorial plaques and pillars. The design references the local and historic context of limestone quarrying with a series of curved stone walls offering privacy for more intimate memorial spaces.
